Snow Gums are the classic alpine tree of the Australian High Country. And they’re now at risk.
Snow gums can survive fire. However, climate change driven fire seasons are leading to more frequent fire, which is causing more death of trees and changes to forest structure. Dieback, which is caused by a native beetle, but becoming more damaging due to the effects of climate change, is devastating large sections of the high country. In many places, localised ecological collapse is now occurring.
Snow gums dying across the Alps is comparable to the coral bleaching of reefs.
We know that scientists have solutions and we can intervene. However, the Victorian government refuses to investigate the scale of this collapse or options to secure the survival of this iconic species.
We have worked hard for three years to convince the Victorian government to act on this important issue. Sadly, the current environment minister has not been willing to act, and so we are now asking you to send an email to the Premier, Jacinta Allan urging her to take steps to protect the iconic Snow Gum forests.
You can sign the letter to the premier here.

Please help us spread the word
Please post on social media, with a simple message along the lines of:
‘This is what ecological collapse looks like. Its happening on our watch. The state government must intervene to protect snow gums’.
If you use this hashtag we can track the posts: #SaveOurSnowgums

Use one of the images in this email, or use one of your own, or You’re welcome to use any of the snow gum images in this folder to go with your post.
You can find out about our proposed rescue plan for the snow gums here.
Although this is just one small step that we will need to take if Victoria is going to stop and reverse ecological decline, meaningful action by the state government would help secure the future of snow gum woodlands and forests.
