The magazine is a limited print run (1,000 copy) journal which is produced each autumn (and also added as a PDF to the Mountain Journal website).

It is a 100% volunteer effort, so I cannot pay you for your contribution.

The sections are:

News from Home – environmental news from lutruwita/ Tasmania and the Australian Alps. Contributions are welcome: emerging issues, updates on campaigns, etc relevant to mountain environments. Ideally less than 200 words, with some web links so people can find out more.

Around the Fire – chats with mountain people. These can be longer interviews/ profiles with people with connection to the mountains (eg a skier, a tour guide, a firefighter, researcher, trail runner, etc). Ideally length is 300 – 400 words. Please include an image or two, as JPEGs.

Photo essays and longer articles. We are happy to run two or three longer articles with strong images each edition. Up to 800 words, with multiple images, and a brief bio about the author. Recent stories include a trail run through the Central Highlands of Victoria, a historic piece on the hut at Davey Plain in NSW, and an article about plans to expand the Alpine national park in Victoria. In the 2024 edition we are going to run with some longer (2,000 word) stories – please get in touch if you would like to pitch an idea.

Mountain Culture – any updates on mountain related themes – book reviews, new films, podcasts, guides, events, etc. Short is good, with an image and web link or other contact so people can find out more.

Off track. This is a visual story with up to 400 words of text, focused on an unusual adventure. Previous editions have included a pack rafting descent of the Dargo River and paragliding on the Central Plateau in lutruwita/ Tasmania.

Cover photo: I am always looking for a strong image for the front cover too. An image suitable for use in a wrap around format is always good.

Please get in touch if you’d like to contribute a story or other idea. cam.walker@foe.org.au
