After two warm and depressing winters, all snow lovers needed a break this year, and its absolutely delivered what was needed: good snow pack in resort and backcountry, with regular top ups (despite those periods of miserable rain). Its been great for everyone, including businesses and workers who did it tough the last two years.
It’s great to see that things are looking good for the Kangaroo Hoppet, which is Australia’s main cross country ski event which draws people from around the world.
You probably recall that the Hoppet was cancelled in 2024:
It is with much sadness that we have to inform you that the 2024 Kangaroo Hoppet has been cancelled due to rapidly deteriorating snow conditions on the course, combined with a weather forecast of warm temperatures and rain in the next week.
From the Hoppet website:
‘Every year, on the fourth Saturday of August, over 1,000 cross country skiers of all nationalities, ages and abilities come to Falls Creek for the Kangaroo Hoppet. This unique event, held on Falls Creek’s world class network of groomed trails extending out into the Bogong High Plains of Australia’s Alpine National Park, is a great opportunity for everyone from beginners to Olympians to step into their skis and celebrate cross country skiing in Australia.’
Its wonderful to know its likely to go ahead this year: good for community spirit, the businesses of Falls Creek, and an awesome chance to get out in some beautiful country.
It is scheduled for saturday August 23.
You can find details on the Kangaroo Hoppet website.
