For years now we have covered the debate around the Victorian governments plan to radically upgrade the Falls to Hotham Crossing (you can find stories here). It would upgrade the current walk, diverting it via Mt Feathertop and The Razorback, and is deeply unpopular among most outdoors users and environmentalists as it would introduce private commercial infrastructure in the Alpine national park.

While this is a state government initiative, there is now a very short period of time to make a submission to the federal government about the proposal. This is because it is being reviewed under the federal nature laws (called the EPBC). Opportunities for public comment close on November 10, 2025. Please take a few minutes to send in a personal submission.

You can make a submission here.

Please tick the box: yes, this is a controlled action – ie the federal government needs to consider it.

Here are some points to make in your submission (these come from the Victorian National Parks Association):

  • Parks Vic failed to investigate alternatives less impact on wildlife and habitats.
  • The development will impact threatened wildlife including Alpine She-oak Skinks, Shining Cudweeds and Guthega Skinks.
  • Promises of restoration by Parks Victoria will be difficult if not impossible to deliver.
  • The project is deeply unpopular. It’ll cause serious and irreparable harm to a treasured and sensitive place of our national heritage, impacting on aesthetic and social values.
  • Parks Vic have yet to show any interest in reducing the spread of weeds and pathogens like frog-killing chytrid fungus by introducing wash down stations for walkers and hikers.
  • The Australian Alps make up less than 1% of Australia’s landscape – destruction of these fragile habitats must be avoided.

Many thanks!
