I started Mountain Journal back in 2010. Hiding from the mid summer heat, I drew inspiration from Mountain Gazette, a long lived magazine from the USA, and started turning out a few stories under the general themes of ‘news, environment and culture’ from the Australian Alps. Almost a decade later I finally managed to produce a printed magazine, which is now in its 4th year of production.
Somewhere along the way I wrote “people do want to read well crafted content that comes from *somewhere*. Place still matters, and mountains are some of the most compelling environments, drawing us mountain lovers in, helping to form the communities and cultures we develop as we try to make sense of each place.”
Most of what I read is online nowdays. But I do love the experience of print. Finding a sunny spot under a tree and diving into a magazine or book remains a very different experience to sitting on some kind of electronic device. We all know that print is hard – its expensive to produce and distribute. But it has an enduring charm and many people still love the substance and feel of paper-based reading, be it magazine or book.
I recently stumbled on Forty South, ‘an independent Australian magazine focusing on the society, culture and lifestyle of Tasmania’. It does have some lovely content about lutruwita/ Tasmania, with a keen eye to the wild places that make that island so special. That always gets me thinking about what else is out there.
Here’s a few that I know of that are local to, and focused on, what is happening in and around the mountains of south eastern Australia.

Lamont magazine
Lamont Magazine is a stylish and timeless lifestyle magazine full of action, adventure, photography, fashion and food. Featuring original stories about the mountains and the people whose lives and loves are in them. Made from a passion by people who live in and love the mountains.
I do love Wild magazine, which has always been a magazine about the wild places we love.
Plus all the local newspapers, of course, like the Mansfield Courier or the Alpine Observer.
Yes, there are many great mountain themed websites and quite a few podcasts. What other magazines have I missed?

Great Walks magazine is an Aussie mag published every 2 months, often with stories about, or relating to, the mountains.
In recent years I have contributed articles about various hikes in Victoria’s High Plains, hiking sections of the AAWT, plus more.
The magazine also includes articles relating to safety in the mountains, appropriate gear for walking at elevation, etc.
A magazine well worth checking out.
