Love the mag? Become a Friend of Mountain Journal for $20 a year to support future publications!
Here’s the thing… we might have fooled you with our sleek magazine into thinking we’re a super professional setup, but we’re actually a very grassroots operation.
From the start, Mountain Journal has deliberately been a free, non-commercial magazine: available to anyone online and offline in huts and villages through the alps, bringing you stories of local community members having great adventures and working to protect the mountains, made possible by generous contributions of writing and photography.
The time it takes to collate and edit the magazine is entirely voluntary. And this is in addition to the year-round upkeep of the Mountain Journal website, which publishes everything from snow and safety reports, to relevant political updates, to local campaigns and opportunities to take action, to longer form pieces, and more.
And as for distribution… that basically comes down to Cam dropping copies off everywhere he goes through the alps, including stuffing a few copies into his hiking pack to leave in every hut he passes! A labour of love, at its core.
Aside from voluntary efforts, the magazine has annual costs, which until now have been entirely self funded and consist of paying for:
- The front cover photographer
- Our wonderful designer, Tess Sellar
- Printing by Black Rainbow, which uses 100% recycled paper, non-toxic inks and solar powered operations
To be sustainable into the future, we need a bit of help to start covering our costs. Will you support the future of the magazine by becoming a Friend of Mountain Journal for $20 a year?
To become a Friend, simply transfer $20 to the bank details below, and then email cam.walker@foe.org.au with a screenshot of the transfer and your address, so we can post you a copy. (We don’t have the fancy version of the website that will let us set up a payment form. What did we say? Grassroots!)
The $20 covers your copy of the magazine and postage, plus a couple of extra copies (their unit cost is $6) to ‘pay it forward’ for everyone who enjoys reading the magazine for free in huts, mountain towns and campgrounds across the alps.
