Mountain Journal started as a website in the summer doldrums of 2010. In 2021, it finally emerged in print form as a covid lockdown inspired project. Since then there have been five annual editions produced. It is written each summer and distributed through mountain areas each autumn and winter.
As we get to the end of 2025, we are thinking about the 2026 edition and would welcome your ideas and contributions.
Some years there is a cover theme – for instance the first edition focused on First Nations aspirations for the high country. The 2025 edition focused on the question of ‘when will we miss winter’. Do you want to suggest a theme for next year, or offer a story or images?
One enduring idea that we would like to explore is the role of mountain huts as life saving infrastructure. Many of us have stories of being saved by a hut, in a whiteout, a lightning storm, torrential rain. Do you have a story you’d like to share?
