We produce Mountain journal magazine once a year, and distribute 1,000 copies for free in breweries, cafes, gear shops, and info centres in valley towns and resorts between Melbourne and Canberra, plus in mountain huts across the high country. It is intended for outdoors people who love the mountains. The magazine is also produced as a PDF and freely available on the website (here).

We now have a theme for the 2026 edition: managing change in the mountains, which will aim to delve into the complex issues of new people and groups who are now visiting the mountains, and how we can welcome these groups while ensuring everyone has a good and safe time in the hills.

Now we need to find the funds to make it happen.

MJ magazine has been a passion project and I have paid for the print costs of each edition. In 2025, local outdoor equipment company One Planet also made a contribution to the production cost (thanks!). All the writing and editing is a 100% volunteer effort. But there are the hard costs of printing the mag. In 2026 I cannot afford to pay for the entire run and am asking for some assistance.

Here are a few ideas:

  • Consider becoming a ‘friend of MJ’ by contributing $20. This pays for the copy we will send you, plus 2 extra copies that we can distribute for free. Details here.
  • If you can afford a large donation, we will acknowledge that in the 2026 print edition. Details on how to do a bank transfer is available here.
  • If you are involved in, work for, or otherwise know a good business, brand, organisation that might be willing to support the production of the magazine then please get in touch. We can offer an ad in the print magazine and PDF. Or please pass this on to the relevant person in that organisation with your recommendation.

We need $6,000 to print the magazine. If we can hit and surpass that target we will print more copies.

Thanks for having a read of this. Hope you can help in some way.

And of course, we are looking for writers for the magazine, check here to see more on the theme.

It does feel weird asking for money. My approaches to various brands have not had any luck so far and I am hoping we can keep the magazine dream alive by finding the funds to produce another edition in 2026.

Thanks all, Cam. Cam.walker@foe.org.au / 0419 338 047
