This is another great guide to north east Victoria. Like the Walk and Trails guide, the Bright and Surrounds cycle guide provides a fantastic introduction to all types of riding in the area from Myrtleford to Mt Beauty and Falls Creek to Dinner Plain.
It includes easy, family friendly riding, road riding options and the many shared trails (including the popular Rail Trails) plus details on Mountain bike riding. It is produced by the Alpine Shire. You can get free copies in local tourist information centres or download it as a pdf here.
The Adventure Travel Film Festival ‘showcases the best adventure travel films and talent from Australia and overseas’.
‘The Festival is a three-day event guaranteed to appeal to adventurers, armchair travellers and dreamers alike. The festival will be brimming films and inspirational talks, featuring celebrated local and international adventurers, covering everything from trekking, motor cycling and four wheel driving to kayaking, climbing, cycling, long-distance horse-riding and much more’.
It will be held in Bright, on February 9, 10 and 11.
The Alpine Shire has produced a great walking guide for the areas between Myrtleford and Mt Beauty to Dinner Plain and back to Harrietville. Operating through the ‘Bright & Surrounds‘ tourist info program, the guide offers descriptions for walks in and around key towns plus wilder destinations like the Alpine National Park, Mt Bogong and the Buffalo Plateau.

This excellent resource aims to get more visitors to the region out on walking tracks, and makes it easy for first timers by providing full details on the distance and difficulty and notes for more than 65 walks.
Totally Renewable Yackandandah is a volunteer run community group, formed in 2014, with the goal of powering their town with 100% renewable energy and achieving energy sovereignty by 2022.
One of TRY’s standout projects is the TRY Perpetual Energy Fund (PEF), which raises funds from donations that are reinvested in community projects around Yack to increase energy efficiency, generate renewable electricity and for storage. Loans are repaid from the savings made on electricity bills and the Fund is perpetuated for community sustainability projects. The first project was with Yackandandah Health Service (YHS). In 2015, TRY raised $5,000, which was loaned to YHS for the energy efficiency improvements. The connection of a 90kW solar-panel system at Yackandandah Health Service (YHS) replacement of 276 light fittings with low maintenance LED lights.
TRY is a great example of community controlled initiatives which are designed to transition to a more sustainable basis while also building a sense of community power.
The Bright Mountain Film Tour (BMFT) is a celebration of mountain culture and those who embrace it. Over five nights, the best adventure films from around the world are showcased amongst the alpine communities of North East Victoria.
This year BMFT2 will ‘feature some epic, home-grown, Aussie adventures and some awesome female adventures, recognising the diversity in adventure sports’.
There are five shows over the Christmas/ New Year period.

The Bright Mountain Film Tour (BMFT) is a celebration of mountain culture and those who embrace it. The organisers say ‘over five nights, the best adventure films from around the world are showcased amongst the alpine communities of North East Victoria’.
This year BMFT2 will feature some epic, home-grown, Aussie adventures and some awesome female adventures, recognising the diversity in adventure sports.
Bright has become the epicentre of mountain sports with visitors from around the world enjoying everything the town and surrounding area has to offer. The BMFT is not just a film festival, it’s a community celebration. The films are handpicked by a panel of local enthusiasts, all experts in their related fields of filmmaking, mountain sports and tourism. The BMFT organising committee are looking to grow the event through the support of like-minded sponsors.
There are screenings planned for the new year period, in a range of towns, starting on December 28.
The Bright Brewery is a key business in Bright in north eastern Victoria. It has grown steadily over the years, and has an impressive operation in a fantastic location. The brewery is connected to the community, supporting local musicians, and many initiatives, like bike rides and events, and recently the Bright Festival of Photography. It financially supports many initiatives in north east Victoria.
It also has a strong commitment to sustainability:
The Bright Mountain Film tour is on after Christmas, starting at the Bright Community Centre on December 28. It features outdoor adventure films from around the world, including mountain bike riding, extreme paddling, climbing, horse riding and para gliding.
There are also shows in Myrtleford, Mt Beauty, Harrietville and finishing with a second show in Bright on Jan 6.
Bright Brewery will be known by anyone who has driven through the town of the same name. It has recently launched its solar PV system. Brewery founder and owner Scott Brandon says “the environment is one of the biggest drivers of Bright’s economy, drawing many visitors here across the seasons for the spectacular scenery and alpine adventures, so it is imperative for us to do our part in sustaining it.”
The Audax Alpine Classic is a series of road rides to a number of locations in the Alps.
In 2016 it will be held on Sunday 24 January.
This is a huge event. There are a range of rides, including the 320 kilometre ‘Ultimate’. It is billed as the “longest, toughest, single day Alpine road ride in Australia”. This is an extremely hard ride, going over 4 of the “7 Peaks” in one day, leaving Bright for Mt Buffalo, then doing a huge circuit from Bright to Mount Hotham, then Omeo, Anglers Rest and over the Bogong High Plains to Falls Creek and back to Bright.
There are also a number of shorter rides (60 and 70 kilometres). All rides start at Bright.
There is an ‘early bird’ special if you register before January 8.
