Mountain Journal often advertises high energy events like trail running, road riding, cross country races, etc. But summer is also a good time to relax, take it easy, and chill out with friends. Here are some listings for festivals, low key nature events, and social gatherings that are happening in the Alps over summer 2017/18.

Wildflower walks at Mt Baw Baw

Guided walk at Mt Hotham

Mount Hotham has been a bushwalking destination for generations, with the first European ‘Bushwalkers’ crossing the Great Divide in the 1850’s in search of gold. Learn how the golden era eventually transformed the region from wilderness to the resort we know today, in our free summer bushwalking program.
9.30am – Mount Higginbotham Loop
Steep hills, Grade 3 – Approximately 3km return
Walkers will meet at the Village Square, Corral Car park at 9:30am. This short stroll takes in the summit of Mount Higginbotham and some of the early history of the resort. returning via East Street and Higgi Drive, exploring the Pygmy Possum habitat along the way. Returning to the Village Square.

Australia Day BBQ on Kosciuszko, 26 JAN

Flickerfest on Australia Day at Dinner Plain

A free celebration of the best of Australian Short Film
We are excited to welcome the internationally renowned Flickerfest film festival to Dinner Plain on Australia Day 2017.
Grab your picnic blanket, some cheese and bikkies and a bottle of wine or a Blizzard brew and relax on the grass of the ski slope, under a starry sky among the snow gums.
When the sun goes down, the giant outdoor screen will light up with the 2017 winners of Flickerfest’s Best of Australian Film.
This is a free event. What a way to celebrate the alpine summer on Australia Day!
Mt Buller chamber music summer school

The Mt Buller Chamber Music Summer School runs each January in the Mount Buller village. This residential school caters for up to 12 chamber string groups, composed mainly of string players.
Each year the summer school presents two extremely popular free chamber music concerts in the Alpine Chapel.
Picnic in the park (Mirimbah, base of Mt Buller)

Join us for a relaxing afternoon at Mirimbah Park at the base of Mt Buller, where a number of local food and wine producers will tempt you with their beautiful High Country produce, while you relax on the grass and enjoy the live music and entertainment.
Tickets will be available to purchase online closer to the date
Gates will open 11am-5pm, entry $20 for adults and includes a souvenir wine glass and complimentary beverage
Kids under 18 receive free entry.
Falls Creek Dragon Boat Regatta

‘As the highest dragon boat event in Australia (approximately 1600 metres above sea level), this event has been held at Rocky Valley lake for over a decade now, bringing together visitors, residents and dragon boat enthusiasts from all over to compete and join in the festivities.
The grassy banks of Rocky Valley Lake are a beautiful place to spend the day with the family and soak in the excitement of the races. On the foreshore there are also food and drinks available, plus on Saturday night the action continues with post-race dinners and parties throughout the village.
Teams of up to 20 can register for a variety of categories and there are always opportunities for individuals to join an existing team. If you haven’t paddled in a dragon boat before there is no need to worry as a range of safety and skills training sessions will ensure you are ready to race. The Victorian Dragon Boat Association provide experienced helms and instructors, they have paddles, boats and buoyancy vests.
