Last September, outdoor and mountain communities joined the student’s strike for climate in unprecedented numbers. A highlight for me was the colourful gathering that happened at Mt Hotham, demanding action on climate change.

On September 25, school strike for climate are organising another day of nationwide actions and they would welcome your involvement.

They say:

‘Australian communities have been hit hard by the dual bushfire and coronavirus crises. Right now we have an opportunity to build the future we can all thrive in by creating clean jobs that care for country, climate and our communities.

Instead the Federal Government and the Covid-19 Commission are secretly making plans to give billions of dollars in handouts to their mates in the gas industry that will turbocharge the climate crisis and threaten First Nations lands.

That’s why on Friday September 25 First Nations communities, School Strikers and young people, workers and unions are coming together to demand that our Government funds our future not gas.

We are taking action on September 25 to demand:

  • No public funds for gas and other damaging fossil fuel projects. Instead, recovery funds should be spent on:
  • Resourcing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led solutions that guarantee land rights and care for country
  • The creation of jobs that fast-track solutions to the climate crisis and help communities recover from the pandemic
  • projects that transition our economy and communities to 100% renewable energy by 2030, through expanded public ownership.

Event organisers are encouraged to plan events in line with health and safety restrictions in their location to minimise the spread of Covid-19.

You can find out more here, including details on actions near you, and an organisers kit if you want to do your own.
