We’re delighted to announce that the second Victorian Backcountry Festival will be held over the weekend of September 7 and 8, 2019, at Mt Hotham.

Celebrating all things backcountry – splitboarding, cross country, alpine touring, snow shoeing, telemark, and mountain culture.

Mt Hotham, Sept 7 – 8

Join us for the 2nd Victorian backcountry festival:

  • Two days of clinics, tours, workshops. We already have tours planned which cover snow shoeing, XC, alpine touring, telemark and splitboarding. Skillshares will cover things like avalanche safety, ski mountaineering, snow camping and navigation.
  • There will be an extended speaker’s program, with great presentations on women and the backcountry, a human powered crossing of Antarctica, and ski mountaineering in the European Alps.
  • Demos, info stalls and an outdoor bar.
  • There will be 2 day avalanche courses (AST 1) delivered by Alpine Access Australia, followed by a 3 day campout to test new skiing and riding skills on Mt Feathertop (Sept 9 – 11).

Presented by Mountain Journal & Mountain Sports Collective with the support of Hotham and many groups & businesses. Check the website for full details.

All welcome. $10 registration (You can register here. Pre registration really helps with planning). People who pre-register will get first option to join the tours.

We aim to launch the program in the week of May 20.

Do you want to get involved in planning the 2019 festival?

2019 will be bigger and better and I’m hoping some extra people will come on board to co-ordinate particular aspects of the festival:

  • The BC film festival. This job would involve curating the film festival, including finding suitable films, organising the program, and identifying speakers and MC for the night, and sorting the logistics for the evening.
  • The program. At this years’ festival, more than 20 people shared their skills by offering a clinic, tour, workshop or talk (thanks!). Our aim is to pull together a similar program for 2019, with more sessions on the Sunday than we had this year. The person co-ordinating the program would be the contact point for people who want to offer a session, and responsible for compiling the program to ensure a good balance of events, and then communicating with the tour leaders about logistics. Check here for the 2018 program, to give you a sense of what we’re looking for.
  • The speakers program. This year there was a wonderful session with Katya Crema and Tamara Hutchins aimed at women who are starting to get into the backcountry and a ‘BC skills 101’ from Margaret. We’d love to expand the speakers program next year, with a range of new sessions, conversations and skillshares, and a diversity of voices.

If you’d like to co-ordinate one of these aspects of the program (or would like a bit more information about what it might entail) then please get in touch: cam.walker@foe.org.au
